Artist Statement
This was an especially fun commission primarily due to its fun juxtaposition of themes but also because of its particular challenges. You could not see the entire wall from any one point of view. The scaffolding consumed the entire walk way further preventing vision. The idea was that from every vantage point, a new point of interest would be in focus. The primary theme was Alice in Wonderland. I referenced the classic illustration when Alice is looking up at the Cheshire Cat in the tree. The idea was that if the viewer were to step into the scene, they would become the Alice figure. So we grew a tree across 2 stories of the neighboring building and the Cheshire Cat is indeed sitting in the tree. The other main idea was that the third story would blend into the sky to create more spaciousness and not offend the neighbors. So I painted a gradual sky gradient across three stories. I arced the phases of the moon descending down the wall. The full moon was of course a reference to the 1902 French film "Le Voyage dans La Lune" (A Trip to the Moon) sans rocket ship. The ending crescent moon was the Cheshire Cat's smile. My assistant, pictured above, learned how to use her tail as a paint brush and supervised the whole way through.
